We do not like the early beginnings of awareness of consciousness because of two things: one is that it is the voice of our conscience and the second is free will. The voice of conscience seeks to adjust our actions and thoughts in relation to the Common Good. But these "pricks" of conscience are subject to our individual free will to listen to that voice or not. Yet like Pinnochio, we can only become Real once we follow the dictates of that "still small voice" whispering what is right and good. And, we become Real because of where the thread of that "still small voice" leads us ultimately.
Yet sincere efforts to link to the Common Good is one practice that develops our receptivity and responsiveness to that conscience as a prelude to expanding our consciousness. This may be of assistance in that effort.
The following teaching expands this topic:
"...the voice of consciousness is sometimes called 'the still, small voice', but this is not precise. It is also called the voice of profoundness, which is somewhat closer to the truth. But why avoid the most simple, namely, The Voice of Consciousness? Only thus can we understand that the command of the consciousness has its own insights, and reflects the link with the Supermundane World." Supermundane III, para. 457
